Iranian Graphic Design
The other day in class we had the opportunity to interview Steven Heller. I asked him about global communication and design in other cultures, and he briefly mentioned Iranian design. My god man… this stuff is amazing. Very inspiring.
Most of the stuff I’ve come across has some really great typography, which makes me think: am I able to appreciate it better because I have no clue what it says and I don’t get lost in the message? I know, I know… The message is king. But maybe I can appreciate the craft and aesthetic more because I don’t get caught up in words. I could be wrong (and I probably am), but I think the text is in Farsi. The letter forms are beautiful.
Here’s a couple of posters:

SXSW T-Shirt
The kind folks at South by Southwest thought my mess was worthy of being sported on a shirt, and decided to let me make one with their name on it.
Click on the image if you’d like to purchase one. They’re real nice.

Dawn of the Dead
Here’s a poster for the 1978 movie Dawn of the Dead. The bottom of the poster is perforated so you can detach it and take the rest to the gun range and practice for the inevitable zombie uprising.

Murakami Noodle Soup
This is a self-promotional piece for Takashi Murakami. I decided on instant noodle soup because it is a great example of taking something very traditional and giving it a western twist. Rice noodles + hot water = instant gratification. I originally set out to do only one flavor (shiitake mushroom) to communicate the references to hallucinogenics in Murakami’s work, and also as a metaphor for the bombing of Hiroshima, which Murakami sees as the birth of today’s westernized Japan. My teacher then challenged me to figure out a way to take this to the commercial realm, so I decided to add two more flavors: Spring Vegetable and Sesame Chicken.

Takashi Murakami Logo
So why a puking flower, you say? well, let me tell you.
Murakami has used a smiling flower as a metaphor for the people of Japan, and a puking figure as a self-portrait. The short version: you put those two together and you get Japan purging out Murakami.
It’s pretty neat because it also communicates how Muramaki feels about the western influence in Japanese culture.
